Submission to CPCA – Bus Routes

We are pleased to share our report and recommendations recently prepared for the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) Public Transport Services. The team reached out to the A to B1102 Group to comment on proposed changes to bus routes through our corridor which are being developed as a result of the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Mayor’s additional precept funding which has been agreed to fund improvements to bus services.

The report and proposals was able to draw evidence from the incredibly important travel survey that 891 people contributed to between October and December 2023.

New Bus Routes & Upgrading of Existing Routes

The proposals by the CPCA, building on stakeholder engagement over a number of months includes a new bus route running along the B1102 corridor, then into Bottisham and from there onwards through the Wilbrahams, Fulbourn and into the Addenbrookes area and improvements to the existing bus route along the B1102 corridor.

The A to B1102 Group has evaluted this proposal and made recommendations which would enable the establishment of a fast, direct bus route from Soham to Cambridge Drummer Street and an interconnecting service from Newmarket through Exning, Burwell, Reach, Swaffham Prior, Swaffham Bulbeck, Lode, Bottisham, The Wilbrahams, Fulbourn and on into the Addenbrookes site, the new Cambridge South Rail Station (when built) and back via Long Road 6th Form College.

As the report makes clear, interconnectivity is key with the provision of real-time passenger information at bus stops, on the buses and to passenger’s mobile phones. We believe these new services will enable students to get to post-16 education establishments with easy, quick, interconnections and get people to medical appointments at Addenbrookes as well as servicing the biomedical campus around Addenbrookes.

The A to B1102 Group were delighted to be given the opportunity to contribute to this important piece of work. To this end we have worked closely with combined authority officers to assist in their thinking on how best to serve our villages, acknowledging the growth of Cambridge and the varied needs of our diverse population. We are especially grateful to the young people who responded. It is apparent that it’s tough being an aspirational teenager in our villages, wishing to attend any form of higher eduction after secondary school.

Whilst the CPCA have made clear they cannot guarantee to adopt all our recommendations, they have expressed their thanks and admiration for the quality of the report and its recommendations, analysed and written by our dedicated voluntary team. Thank you to all those who have contributed.

Let’s ensure the B1102 Corridor is one step ahead – leading the way for Cambridgeshire!
